I Remember... Hide & Go Seek

... being allowed to stay up until 7:30 to play hide and go seek with our housegirls, and then having to take a mandi again when we finished and came inside.

... taking the wash-house key from the dining room rack, as well as the one from the office, and hiding inside the wash-house and locking the door, so no one could come in and find us.

... taking both keys, and hiding someplace else, to make them think we'd hid inside.

... climbing the wire walls of the wash-house when the other team had the keys, and laying on the beam in the eaves, out of sight... they would come inside to check, and we weren't there, of course.  :)

... braving the ketapan trees with the big red ants, because no one would look up there.

... having special "hide and go seek" clothes that were dark and blended in with the shadows and whatever we were hiding in/behind (trees, branches, boxes, grass, etc).

... climbing up the storage shelves in the garage, up to the very top, and hiding behind totelockers and suitcases, and hoping the seekers didn't think there was space for a person up there.

... making Esther (a toddler?) go with the other team so that when we wanted to find them, all we had to do was call her name, and she'd answer...  Voila, mission accomplished.  *grins*

... hiding in lemari's (how do you pluralize an Indonesian word, American style?  :P ) and bathrooms and under beds in the guest rooms...

... knowing which spots in each guest room were the best for hiding in.  The top bunk and under the pillows in kamar satu, the top bunk in kamar dua, the lemari in kamar tiga, under the bed in kamar empat...

... climbing the bookshelves in the library, and crouching on top in the corner, hopefully above the range of curious eyes.  (I did that one at the new guest house too... hehe.)

... lying in the grass and shadows along the fence between our yard and our neighbor's yard - close to the garden, in the shadow cast by the stone/cement foundation... a person could walk within feet, and unless they looked down, we wouldn't be seen.

... climbing the jambolan tree higher than usual, and placing arms and legs at odd angles, to hopefully imitate branches.

... sneaking outside the fence, and hiding in the shadows of the gate posts, excited with the thrill of hiding outside bounds...

... being mad when someone else hid outside by the gate.  :P

... playing on the pembantu's fear of toads, by catching one (or sometimes not :P ) and loudly proclaiming that "saya ada kodok" ("I have a frog/toad"), she'd scream or screech, and we'd find them.

... cheating and running through our house, instead of out and around where there might be people looking...

... hiding in the back of the truck, under the benches, when McIntyre's were over for popcorn and a movie.  The same truck that we now own and drive...

... hiding in small yard's back corner, in the plant with the humongous leaves, and hoping one didn't hear a crunch, because that would mean you'd just stepped on a snail.  :P

... pulling out the living room couch to hide laying down on the ledge in the back, and hoping no one happened to look behind the porch chairs and through the window and see me.

... squeezing under the buffet in the dining room and being glad that the pembantu's swept and mopped every morning.

... being mad that I couldn't fit under the buffet anymore.  :P

... the slight feeling of dread and anticipation as one sits in the dark, wondering if the finders are getting close, and not daring to peek and see...

... spending the whole afternoon looking forward to the evening, running over to the kitchen and coaxing and teasing the housegirls to come play with us... sometimes even before they'd finished their dinner.

... running and laughing and being a carefree child...
